Just another day…

You get ready for bed one night… a night just like any other.  You turn off the news and the bedside lamp and get under the covers.  You wake the next morning, have some breakfast and run some errands.  It’s just a normal day… seemingly.  But really, this day is different… because it’s your last.

Today you die… and you never saw it coming.

That’s how it happens.

You do all of these mundane things.  You ignore certain phone calls and tell yourself you’ll return them later.  You just go on about your day never imagining… that later is not in the cards for you.

Death always puts things in perspective… at least for a little while… until we get back into our own groove and start feeling invincible again… like it could never be our reality.

On Wednesday morning I received a text message that read, “Louie Nazario Sr. died last night… massive heart attack.”

Just like that.

I dreaded the phone call to my mother because she was very close to him.  As soon as I told her, she became hysterical, and in the midst of her cries, she mumbled, “But I just saw him… he was fine… we were just at that party.”

And he was fine, until he wasn’t anymore.

And that’s how it happens.

Just like that.

Take nothing for granted.  Live your life with passion, and when you wake each morning… remind yourself of how lucky you are.  Take a deep breath in and FEEL the air filling your lungs…  as you exhale remind yourself that, that next breath you take is a gift.  As you are breathing, at this very moment, somewhere someone is taking their very last breath.

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life.  But there was always some obstacle in the way.  Something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.  Then life would begin.  At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.  ~Fr. Carpe Diem.
