Appearances.

I was sitting on the hot train platform this morning writing in my journal, stopping briefly to put my head down and fluff up the back of my freshly cut hair.  I flipped my hair back, looked up and found this woman smiling at me.  She had been watching me.  It wasn’t creepy or flirty, or anything like that.  It was very innocent actually.  I smiled back before she turned to get on the arriving Manhattan bound 5 train.  I watched her and silently said a little prayer for her.  I wished her a long, happy and healthy life.  We will probably never see each other again, but for a moment, we were connected.

I wonder what she thought of me in that moment.  Did she think I looked cool sitting there, sipping on my Red Bull, writing in my journal and playing with my hair?  I didn’t feel cool at all. Was she admiring my new doo?  I would have told her that I didn’t want this doo.  I HAD to cut my hair because of a protein deficiency and extremely damaged hair that is going to take 3-6 months to repair.

Funny how we look at other people and admire them, or at least, who WE perceive them to be.  We imagine their awesome lives, and maybe even feel a little envious.  Most times those perceptions couldn’t be further from the truth.

Appearances are funny that way.

  1. You’re absolutely right. But, the hair? The new doo is, as my big bro the hair expert would say, FIERCE! FRESH! AND FABULOUS! ;)

  2. Thank you Carol :) Triple F, love it! :)
